The main event
Yr Wyddfa via the Snowdon Ranger Path
The Snowdon Ranger Path starts directly opposite the hostel. It is the oldest route up Yr Wyddfa and the most forgiving underfoot — a steady, well-graded climb that gains height gradually and opens onto Clogwyn Du'r Arddu and the Cwellyn valley behind you.
Around eight miles there and back, four to six hours for most walkers. Starting from the door means no parking queue and no shuttle bus, so you can set off early and be back for a late lunch.
Two minutes away
Llyn Cwellyn
The lake sits just across from the hostel, ringed by mountains and open to the sky. It is one of the better wild swimming spots in Eryri, with a shingle shore that makes getting in and out straightforward, and it is a designated fishery for brown trout and Arctic char.
Paddleboards and kayaks go on easily. Even if you do none of that, the walk along the shore at the end of the day is worth the five minutes it takes to get there.
On the doorstep
The Welsh Highland Railway
Snowdon Ranger station is a short walk from the front door, and the narrow-gauge steam trains of the Welsh Highland Railway stop there through the season. The line runs between Caernarfon and Porthmadog through some of the best scenery in North Wales.
It also makes a neat one-way walk: take the train out to Rhyd Ddu or Beddgelert, then walk back to the hostel along the valley. Check current timetables before you travel.
On two wheels and on foot
Lon Gwyrfai and the valley walks
Lon Gwyrfai is a traffic-free multi-use trail linking Rhyd Ddu with Beddgelert, suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. It runs through woodland and open moor and makes an easy half-day out from the hostel without touching the main road.
For lower-level days there are lake circuits, forest tracks around Beddgelert Forest and quieter summits like Moel Eilio and Mynydd Mawr — all reachable without a long drive.
